Michels Corporation, Brownsville,WI, completed the Fort Smith Water Intake Project in November 2003. Michels installed 60” OD Permalok steel casing pipe into solid granite in two 150 foot drives. Crews used Akkerman microtunneling equipment to complete the drives at an average depth of 90 feet. The project also involved underwater retrieval of the tunnel boring machine.

60” OD Permalok Steel Casing Pipe

Michels Corporation started the first drive on the Beaver Water Distribution (BWD) Intake Facility Project at the end of March. The project involves nine drives of varying length to install 60” OD Permalok steel casing pipe.

Crews will microtunnel through solid rock and carry out underwater retrieval of the MTBM on eight of the nine drives. The ninth drive runs between the two shafts, with two caissons that act as water intake structures. The project is still scheduled to wrap up before the end of the summer.

66” OD Permalok Steel Casing Pipe

Modern Continental, Cambridge, MA, has microtunneled through 200 feet of Phase II of the Salt Creek Gravity Sewer Interceptor Project. Crews have recovered the MTBM and were set to relaunch in February with a Herrenknecht AVN-2000D.

Awarded by the city of Chula Vista for 2.4 million, the project consists of a 1100 foot drive through large amounts of cobblestone to install 66” OD Permalok steel casing pipe. The crew will continue microtunneling 25 feet beneath Interstate-5 and three on and off ramps. Modern plans to finish the project in June.
