The Problem:
Creating a storm sewer beneath the shallow cover of the highly trafficked
Metra Rail Road without disrupting train operations. To avoid peak
train schedules, tunneling could not commence until 8:00 p.m. on
a Friday evening and had to be completed by 4:00 a.m. on Monday
morning.
The Solution:
To install the job’s linear foot requirements in such a
short time frame, Midwest Mole and Glenbrook Excavating used
an Akkerman conventional TBM to install the 54" O. D. Permalok
Steel Casing. Work was completed on schedule, with no disruptions
to the Metra Rail system.
